ABOUT THE ALBUM

‘An Elephant in the Room’ is an original album written and recorded by Alan Garmonsway. Musically, its ten tracks reflect a fusion of the artist’s main musical influences - rock, folk rock and acoustic. Alan’s original piano training contributes to interesting arrangements, particularly as he usually plays all the instruments himself; keyboards, acoustic guitars, bass, percussion, mandolin and tasteful electric guitar licks supporting his vocals. Lyrically, Alan’s approach is mainly observational on life’s events, combining poetic imagery and emotional clarity, with a wry turn of phrase to express his thoughts on a topic.

As the album took shape, a unifying theme emerged; the emotions and experiences we often avoid naming. Joy and despair, birth and death, silence and confession, and the unexpected consequences of life’s turning points. This led Alan back to one song in particular, written after a difficult work meeting – the moment when the real issue went unspoken. That song ‘An Elephant in the Room’ became the album’s emotional and conceptual anchor, giving the project its life and purpose.

Alan went about recording the album in his usual manner – one instrument at a time. Starting out with either a piano or guitar and click-track, songs were initially built up to a triangle of guitar, keyboard and bass. From there each song then developed its identity and direction through choice of instrument and arrangement. ‘When you’re adding one instrument at a time, you have to imagine the whole song being performed. Also where each instrument sits in the song in terms of contribution and playing style’ commented Alan. ‘The final result has to be as though a band is playing together in real time’. Given that his previous two albums won Silver then Gold International Albums of the Year with the International Singer Songwriters Association, we believe that he has achieved this aim!
